A crown may be recommended when a tooth has become damaged due to decay, broken in an injury, or contains a very large filling. They are also often used in conjunction with another treatment, such as a bridge or root canal treatment.
Crowns are designed to cover the tooth like a cap – or ‘crown’ – restoring the broken or decayed parts of the tooth, while protecting it from further damage. They have often been made of a precious metal such as gold, but more recently might be made of porcelain or Zirconia. These have the benefit of fitting in more naturally with the rest of the mouth and helping to enhance the smile.
Crowns are usually applied over two appointments after which full function and a happy smile will be restored to the patient.Back to General Dentistry
